2nd Grade Field Trip Information

The 2nd graders will be going to the IMAX Theater in Branson on Thursday, May 16th.  We will board the buses at about 9:00 a.m. We will go to the 11:00 showing of “Flight of the Butterflies.”  Popcorn and a drink will be provided for each child.  Each child will need to bring $5.00 for the movie and snacks.  All money must be paid in cash to your child’s teacher in advance.  We cannot accept any checks.

Parents are welcome to attend, but will need to pay the regular admission fee of $11.00 when you arrive.  Because this is a reserved seating trip, the IMAX will not guarantee that parents will be able to sit with our group.  It will depend on the size of their general admission crowd that day.

Following the movie we will go to a park in Branson for lunch.  Each child will need to either bring a sack lunch & drink from home (no glass bottles please) or purchase a sack lunch & milk from the cafeteria for $1.75.

Because of the school’s insurance policy, parents will not be allowed to ride the bus.  All students MUST ride the bus to and from the field trip.  The only exception is that a student may leave the field trip ONLY with his/her parent(s), and the student must be signed out with the child’s teacher.

Please return the permission slip that was sent home earlier this week with $5.00 (CASH ONLY) by Friday, May 10th.

Please let me know if you need another copy of the permission slip.

Lost and Found

April 19, 2013

Our Lost and Found collection has reached a point where we simply can’t accumulate any more items.  Currently, when things are left behind throughout the building, we place them on the “fence” across from the preK-4 office.  When parents or students report missing items, they are directed to peruse the collection.  We have coats, jackets, gloves, hats, etc. that have accumulated throughout the year.  If you have an opportunity to stop by the school within the next couple weeks to claim lost items, that would be greatly appreciated.  On May 3, I will gather the remaining items and donate them to a local charity.

Thank you for helping us with this matter!

Reading & Science: This week we started our unit on lifecycles.  We began by reading about types of animals in our science book.  Most of the week was spent talking about what a life cycle was.  Each student created a timeline about his/her own lifecycle—baby, child, teenager, adult, senior citizen.   These projects are awesome!  I will send them home after we have displayed them in the hallway.  They are too good not to share.  Next week we will spend more time talking about the life cycles of different animals- chickens, frogs, and butterflies.

The Reading Challenge concludes May 1 and the date of the movie reward is May 9. Please make sure you are monitoring this project at home.  Students should be reading books on their level to complete these projects.  Each project must be completed from a different book.  This is a MANDATORY assignment.  I still have students that have not turned in a single project at this point.  Please do not wait until the last minute!!

Working with Words:  We got back into our regular routine with word work.  This week we practiced words with tr and st.  We also worked on the –ed ending and the short u sound.  Next week we will focus on words with a final k or ck ending.  We will review the oo digraph.

Writing/Language:  This week our writing went along with our timeline projects.  We have also started talking about informational writing.  Our class started an informational project this week.  Each child has chosen an animal to research.  We will be spending the next week learning to pick out interesting facts that we can use in an informational writing piece, how to organize our writing, and how to turn our thoughts into a research paper.  J
